Democracy: Ancient Perspectives − Modern Challenges: Highlights from the 3rd International Summer School in Athens

The 3rd International English-language Summer School, themed “Democracy: Ancient Perspectives − Modern Challenges,” was held by the Department of Philosophy at the University of Athens from July 15th to 26th, 2024. This academic event, overseen by Professor George Steiris and supported by Study in Greece, brought together students from the University of Kurdistan Hewlêr (UKH) and the University of Edinburgh, highlighting the collaborative agreements among these institutions. The program featured lectures from distinguished professors affiliated with the University of Athens, the University of Crete, Harvard University, and UKH and contributions from independent researchers.

Participants in the summer school enjoyed a comprehensive educational experience, which included exploring key archaeological and cultural landmarks in Attica and nearby regions. The itinerary covered significant historical sites such as the Acropolis of Athens, the Acropolis Museum, the Ancient Agora, the National Archaeological Museum, and the Byzantine and Christian Museum. Additionally, students visited iconic locations like Sounion, Mycenae, Nafplio, Epidaurus, Hydra and Delphi. This combination of academic learning and on-site exploration provided a unique opportunity for students to deepen their understanding of ancient democracy and its relevance to contemporary challenges.
