MA in Sports Ethics and Integrity (MAISI), Erasmus + Joint Master Degree

School of Human Movement and Quality of Life Science | Department of Sport Management

This course is a product of an international collaboration of the following universities:

  • KU Leuven
  • Charles University
  • Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz
  • Swansea University
  • University of the Peloponnese
  • University Pompeu Fabra

The MAiSI is a full time two-year Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree in Sports Ethics and Integrity. Innovative and multidisciplinary, the program is a catalyst for a profession that has been lacking within the sports administration sector. Concentrating on the development of ethical sports cultures and structures, and the development of tools for sports integrity education and compliance, MAiSI is delivered by six prestigious universities in Europe and the UK.

MAiSI is based on strong theoretical foundations and the development of core competencies needed to develop sports integrity expertise. Scholars are equipped to identify ethical issues, engage in critical ethical thinking, and translate decisions into ethical actions at the highest level of sports governance and administration.

SEMESTER ONE & TWO

Develop critical thinking in the following areas of able-bodied and Paralympic/disability sport

Sport as a Social Practice: Norms and values in sport, athlete welfare and safe sport; equality, diversity, and inclusion; moral psychology of sport; disability and Paralympic ethics.

The Nature of Sports Ethics and Ethical Theories: Deontological, consequentialist and virtue ethical theories; conventionalist, formalist and internalist theories of sport; key issues such as athletes’ rights, fair play and officiating, homophobia, transgender eligibility.

Ethics of Anti-doping Policy and Practice: This covers all ethical aspects of anti-doping policy, from its rationale to the implementation of the WADA code. Key issues for discussion include the whereabouts system and rights to privacy, strict liability, fairness and sanctioning, and the Therapeutic Exemption process.

Research Methods, Knowledge and Competencies: This module is held as part of the summer school and introduces students to the major techniques and methods of data capture in social scientific research. This includes questionnaire design and analysis, qualitative interviews and focus group techniques. Students also take part in a “dissertation supermarket” talking with supervisors about potential areas of study for their Master’s thesis.

SEMESTER THREE

The third semester focuses on in-depth organizational issues that will equip you for the managerial, economic and legal aspects of healthy sports governance. You will also begin your Master’s thesis this semester. This entails research topic selection, developing research problems and questions, literature review and preparation of research ethics applications.

SEMESTER FOUR

During the fourth semester, you will have the benefit of being hosted by one of the MAiSI consortium partners to complete your Master thesis. Semester 4 also includes your final taught module in Olympic studies, which is taught as part of the Summer School, and incorporates sites of historical interest from the Ancient Olympic period.

School of Humanities and Cultural Studies | Department of History, Archaeology and Cultural Resources Management

Studies in the interdisciplinary field of Archaeological Science aim to bridge the gap between archaeology and the physical sciences. CultTech MSc is designed to provide broad but detailed knowledge in the theory, as well as practical experience in the major applications of science in archaeology.

CultTech students will be a part of a diverse and multinational group and will be given the opportunity to use a wide range of specialist facilities and collections, while being taught by internationally recognized, research-oriented academic staff. They can use the course to obtain broad expertise in the field, or to specialize in areas such as materials analysis, cultural heritage management, field prospection, reconstruction of objects and sites, etc.

A key issue for CultTech is its orientation towards hands-on research, thus offering post-graduate research training and the potential of the implementation of a thesis project closely related or within ongoing research projects.

The program is a collaboration between the Department of History, Archaeology and Cultural Resources Management (University of the Peloponnese), the National Center for Scientific Research Demokritos and the National Observatory of Athens.
