The Study in Crete (SiC) program invites international students to explore the birthplace of European culture through an academically rigorous and culturally vibrant study abroad experience in Greece. Hosted by the University of Crete, one of the country’s leading research institutions, the program offers an unparalleled opportunity to immerse yourself in the world of Ancient Greece and, especially, the rich archaeological and cultural heritage of ancient Crete.
With applications for the 2026–2027 academic year now open, this is the ideal moment to join a community of learners who are eager to expand their expertise through direct engagement with Greece’s historical and cultural landscapes, while experiencing life on one of the Mediterranean’s most inspiring islands.
An Immersive Academic Experience
The program combines classroom learning with hands-on exploration, creating one of the most comprehensive Classics study abroad programs in Greece. Students attend lectures and seminars led by distinguished faculty, while field visits to world-renowned archaeological sites and museums bring ancient history vividly to life.
The curriculum blends academic rigor with experiential learning, enabling participants to develop advanced research, interpretative, and critical-thinking skills as they engage directly with Greece’s tangible and intangible heritage.
Melina Tamiolaki, Vice-Rector of International Affairs and Co-ordinator of the SiC Program, notes: “The University of Crete is an ideal place to study Classical studies, featuring a vibrant community of distinguished academics who offer a variety of courses on ancient civilization from prehistoric times till Late Antiquity. We look forward to welcoming students to the SiC Program.”
Learning Beyond the Classroom
Study in Crete places students at the heart of some of the most iconic locations in the ancient world. Field trips include visits to:
- Knossos
- Phaistos
- Agia Triada
- Kommos
- Malia
- Gortyn
- Eleutherna
Students also visit the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion, one of Europe’s most important museums for Minoan culture. These site visits offer a rare chance to study ancient history where it actually unfolded.
A Modern Greek Perspective
While the program focuses on classical antiquity, it also provides a rich introduction to modern Greek culture and society. Participants may take Modern Greek Language courses or choose from additional English-taught courses in the Faculties of Social Sciences and Humanities. This interdisciplinary approach ensures students gain a holistic understanding of Greece—past and present.
