The University of Ioannina proudly launches its first international postgraduate program in collaboration with leading American universities, marking a significant milestone in «One Health Education».
Titled “Environmental, Health, and Education Sciences: Education for Sustainability“, the program is a joint effort by the University of Ioannina’s Departments of Early Childhood Education, Medicine, and Biological Applications & Technology, alongside the University of Florida’s Department of Public Health and George Mason University’s Department of Education and Human Resource Development.
This pioneering initiative kicks off in May 2025 with a transformative study abroad segment, welcoming American students to Ioannina for an immersive academic experience. From May 17 — 28, the University of Ioannina will host 33 postgraduate students — 16 from the U.S., 16 from Greece, and one from India (through Erasmus international mobility).
The program is enriched with lectures, workshops, field research, cultural heritage explorations, and an ingenuity competition centered on global sustainability. Activities will take place at the Karolos Papoulias Conference Center, the University’s museums, and its biodiverse campus, fostering an interdisciplinary learning environment.
Beyond academic training, participants will delve into Greece’s natural and cultural treasures, exploring Ioannina, the Epirus region, Zagori — a UNESCO World Heritage site — and the Ionian Islands through integrated activities.
Winners of the program’s sustainability competition will receive financial prizes and awards courtesy of the collaborating institutions.
Distinguished academics, including University of Ioannina’s Rector Prof. Anna Batistatou, Vice-Rector Prof. Ioannis Leonardos, Associate Professor Mike Von Fricken from the University of Florida, Director of its One Health Excellence Center, and leading researchers from the University of Ioannina, Thessaly, Florida, and George Mason, will actively contribute to this prestigious initiative.
The program is led by Prof. Katerina Plakitsi, member of the University of Ioannina’s Governing Council, ensuring its academic excellence and international impact. It is guided by a dedicated board of distinguished experts, whose collective vision and expertise drive its success.
