Yale and Athens University Partnership for joint study programs and a research center on public and environmental health.
The approval process for establishing joint study programs and a research center was held on the July 22, 2021 between the National University of Athens and Yale University of USA as collaborating institutions, on the field of public and environmental health are discussed by Ms. Niki Kerameus, Minister of Education and Religious Affairs, Mr. Nikos Thomaidis, Professor of Analytical Chemistry at Athens University and Mr. Vassilis Vasiliou, Professor and Chairman of the Department of Environmental Health Sciences at Yale University.
The Athens-based center will be run by teams from the two universities who will conduct research on pandemics, climate change, autoimmune diseases. The institutions have already cooperated over the pandemic for the first research projects. This academic partnership is exploring innovative solutions under the scientific and social spectrum with the aims of social environmental risk for the public health.
The program is scheduled to start in the 2022-23 academic year.
The program covers the core areas below:
- Environmental risk, climate change, infectious diseases, chemical and biological risks, COVID included
- Environmental and microbial interactions on public health
- Environmental risk assessment and mitigation — Interdisciplinary impact
- New technologies for environmental health
This promising program aims the educational program development that includes undergraduate level degrees taught in foreign languages, master level degrees, summer courses, seminars and lectures with a focus on environmental health science as well as attracting more international students. This initiative is just a glimpse into the untapped potential of the strategy for extroversion of Greek Universities promoted by the Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs.
