University of Patras

The University of Patras was founded in the city of Patras on 11 November 1964 as a self-governed Academic Institution under the supervision of the Greek Government. The University was initially established with the intention to focus on natural sciences, technology, economics, business administration and social sciences.

The role of the University of Patras was to set an example of a highly qualified Higher Education Institution, thus serving as a stimulus for the modernization of the entire Greek Higher Education System, with priority given to the fields where highly trained personnel would be able to contribute to the economic development of the country. In the course of time, the above objectives had to be adapted to the new prospects arising from the recognition of the key role of knowledge and technology in social and cultural growth and of the contribution the University was expected to make towards addressing major regional, national and even international challenges.

The inauguration of the University of Patras took place on 30 November 1966, on the same day as the celebration of Saint Andrew, the patron Saint of the city of Patras. For this reason, the emblem of the University is an X-shaped cross symbolizing the one on which St. Andrew was crucified.

Initially, the administration of the University was assigned to a Steering Committee. The main purpose of this Committee was to organize the Departments of the University, to determine their operating procedures and to supervise the formation of the organizational structure of the University. The initial Steering Committee was appointed on 9 January 1965 and had its seat in Athens. After a short period of time, the seat of the Committee was transferred to Patras. This Committee ceased to operate its functions in 1974, when new policies concerning the administration of higher education institutions were established, resulting in the formation of the first Senate of the University of Patras which consisted of Professors elected by the University for a one-year term of office.

Presently, the University of Patras remains one of most prominent Universities in Greece with an excellent reputation among the International and European Scientific Community, in line with the vision that led to its establishment.

Masters (MSc)

School of Medicine

This is a bi-institutional program of postgraduate studies of the School of Medicine of the University of Patras and the Department of Biomedical Sciences of the University of West Attica.

The “MSc Cell and Gene Therapies” aims to provide high-level postgraduate education in the field of Advanced Therapeutic Medicinal Products (ATMPs) and especially of Cell and Gene Therapies (CGT).

This program covers all aspects of cell and gene therapy with the purpose to train graduate scientists of various expertise in the fields of production, distribution, clinical evaluation and clinical implementation of CGTs and study both the biological substrate of CGTs and the regulatory framework for their production and their application. The course also includes training in basic cell biology, lab techniques and statistics.

The master program will provide the students with a practical profession with high market demand. The high-level training of health and bio related scientists will empower their skills towards employability as executives in private or public sectors in the areas of Biotechnology and Health and scientists with medical direction will be trained in the fields of CGT clinical research, translation research and their application for treatment of incurable diseases. MSc graduates may proceed to PhD studies.

The Biomedical Engineering – BME is established in a close collaboration of the following four departments of the University of Patras:

  • Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering
  • Department of Computer Engineering & Informatics
  • Department of Mechanical Engineering & Aeronautics
  • School of Medicine

Purpose of Master’s Program

Biomedical engineering is an evolving discipline in engineering that draws on collaboration among engineers, physicians, and scientists to provide interdisciplinary insight into medical and biological problems

The program in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Patras prepares students to apply engineering and applied science to problems in biology, medicine, and the understanding of living systems and their behavior, and to develop biomedical systems and devices in order to promote health. Modern engineering encompasses sophisticated approaches to measurement, data acquisition and analysis, simulation, and system identification. The increasing value of mathematical models in the analysis of living systems can significantly shape our understanding of these complex systems and advance the field. This program does not only offer in-depth training and development of research skills that ensure both expertise in state-of-the-art topics and future involvement in the field, but also encourage our students in the formulation and promotion of scientific thought.

School of Health Sciences| Department of Medical Physics

The postgraduate program in Medical Physics-Radiation Physics was founded in 1988 and has been the first program in Greece (1993) officially offering a Postgraduate Diploma (Master of Science). The program has recently (2018) been revised aiming to:

  • Be harmonized with European Medical Physics Programs of studies accreditation specifications.
  • Prepare graduates (holding a BSc Degree in Physics) to be accepted in the 3-year training in Medical Physics offered by the Greek Hospitals, required for participating in the Professional License Examinations.
  • Offer scientific knowledge and research skills, necessary to Physicists and related Scientists, wishing to be involved in Research and Development in the field of Medical Physics-Radiation Physics.

The Nanomedicine for Drug Delivery (NANOMED) Master’s degree is a 24-months curriculum offering  high quality and multidisciplinary education in the emerging field of Nanomedicine. The design of nanomedicines for drug delivery requires combining knowledge from Pharmacy, Biology, Chemistry, Medicine, Physics, and Engineering. Thus four European Universities have brought together their expertise in Nanomedicine to create a unique and comprehensive training program: Paris Descartes University (coordinator, France), Patras University (Greece), Pavia University (Italy) and Angers University (France).

Moreover, renowned experts in the field of Nanomedicine coming from academia and industry are also involved as guest Lecturers or invited Professors. The curriculum provides both theoretical and practical knowledge for 3 semesters combined with a 6-months traineeship. Application requirements will include the completion of a Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy, or (under special provisions) in Medicine, Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, Material Sciences or other adequate discipline. English language proficiency is the main requirement.

The NANOMED EMJMD (Nanomedicine for Drug Delivery) aims at filling the gap between basic training in Drug Delivery currently provided by most Schools of Pharmacy at the Master’s level, and advanced knowledge in Nanomedicine required for postgraduate young scientists. The NANOMED graduates will thus understand and be able to integrate the advances in Nanotechnology towards the development of Advanced Particulate Drug Delivery Systems.
