University of the Aegean

History

The University of the Aegean (UAegean) was founded in 1984 aiming to introduce new approaches in higher education in Greece and worldwide and to promote regional development. Situated in 6 picturesque islands in the Aegean Archipelago, the UAegean offers a unique natural, cultural and human environment for modern studies in the ancient cradle of knowledge.   From its earliest days, the UAegean challenged the prevailing limitations of the academic endeavor in Greece, both in terms of educational approach and in terms of organizational structure. These challenges were soon transformed into advantages which have culminated in academic achievements and the rapid development of the institution.

In less than thirty years, the UAegean has evolved into an international research –oriented University offering 18 undergraduate (BA or BSc) and 40 postgraduate (MA or MSc) programmes in modern interdisciplinary thematic areas such as environment, communication systems, cultural informatics, product design, food and nutritional sciences, education design  and Mediterranean studies. In addition, the UAegean has established joined international postgraduate programs (i.e. in Biodiversity, Environmental Policy and Management, European Integration) as well as joined PhD degree programmes in a wide range of thematic areas.   The early and full incorporation of Information and Communication Technologies in all aspects of academic and administrative operations and the important research outputs in specific fields of excellence and innovation have transformed this unique network of “academic ports of studies and research” into a dynamic and competitive institution at national and international level and a strong social and economic stakeholder in the region.

The UAegean has created a strong international academic and research profile, having been an active member of the European Universities Association (EUA), a founding partner of the Cremo network, member of the EMUNI Senate, partner in many academic and research networks and participant in more than 210 bilateral and LLP Erasmus academic agreements.   The UAegean has received consistently excellent feedback in evaluations that have taken place at national, European and international level, as a result of the study programmes offered by the institution and its competitive research programs.

Postgraduate programs in foreign languages!

Masters

School of Business | Department of Shipping, Trade and Transport

The core objective of the new “MBA in Shipping” focuses on building upon academic specialization and advanced know-how in the dynamic and complex sector of the global shipping business. This postgraduate program can promote specialized potential executives towards a distinctive high-quality career path in diverse shipping companies, maritime organizations, shipping institutions and policy administrative bodies, in Greece and internationally. This shapes a crucial strategic mindset for Greece in particular, as shipping constitutes one of the most globalized business sectors and a core pillar of the domestic economy.

The “MBA in Shipping” capitalizes on the established long-running cooperation of the University of the Aegean with shipping corporations, institutions and bodies and builds upon the advantages offered by the leading position of Chios island in global shipping.

The new program bears a set of innovative contribution merits relative to domestic academic standards, as:

  • this remains the only Postgraduate Program in Greece that combines the English language with distance learning education;
  • this is a Postgraduate Program that takes advantage, for the first time, of a dynamic institutional feedback process and ongoing dialogue between academia and the shipping industry.

The MESPOM Consortium of six universities – Central European University (Austria and Hungary), Lund University (Sweden), the University of Manchester (UK), the University of the Aegean (Greece), the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey (MIIS) (USA), and the University of Saskatchewan (UoS) (Canada)

MESPOM is an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s Degree in Environmental Sciences, Policy and Management operated by four leading European and two North American Universities.

MESPOM prepares students for identifying and implementing solutions to complex environmental challenges, especially in an international context. It offers a comprehensive inter- and multidisciplinary curriculum in environmental studies that challenges students’ ability to integrate theory and practice for systematic analysis, holistic understanding, and management of diverse environmental issues in various social   contexts. In addition to their academic work, students develop research, communication and other professional skills, learn to orient themselves in European and worldwide networks of environmental institutions and elaborate relevant career objectives and strategies.

The MESPOM study program lasts two years. The fall and winter semesters of the first year are spent at Central European University, Vienna and the spring semester – at the University of the Aegean, Greece. In summer, students take internships supervised by MESPOM faculty and hosted by Associated Partners or other organizations. During the first half of the 2nd year students can choose to study at the International Institute for Industrial Environmental Economics at Lund University or the School of Environmental and Atmospheric Sciences of the University of Manchester. The 4th (research) semester may be hosted by any of the Consortium partners, including our North American partners – Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey (MIIS) (USA) and the University of Saskatchewan (UoS) (Canada)

School of Economics and Political Sciences | Department of Sociology

The war in Syria, as well as the military conflicts in other Asian and African countries, redefine the way of news coverage and the communication management of the refugee/migration issue. The refugee /migration flows and the distorted or non-holistic and interdisciplinary view of the phenomenon lead to incidents of racism and xenophobia as well as crises in host countries. In this context, the postgraduate training of journalists and executives from the private and public sector in this field, both in matters related to the correct, valid and objective journalism and information of citizens and in the direction of communication management of refugee flows will contribute to positive management of tensions and crises created at national and cross-border level.
The intensive Interdepartmental Postgraduate Program (IPP) leads to a Master’s degree (MSc) in “Media and refugee/migration flows” in the following specializations:

  1. “News media of refugee flows”
  2. “Communication management of refugee /migration flows”
  3. “Cultural mediators” which will operate from the academic year 2021-2022.

The purpose of the IPP is to train journalists who will be able to cover cross-border refugee/migration flows. In Greece and in Western Balkan Countries, the phenomenon causes tensions and conflicts. Social network sites sometimes rather aggravate the situation, the role of national and international non-governmental organizations, the intercultural nature of the phenomenon (flows from Syria, Pakistan, Afghanistan, African countries, etc.) are in need of a different approach. Greece as a first host country is required to provide comprehensive, multi-faceted and valid information to European citizens and citizens from the places of origin of refugee flows.

The issues that need to be addressed are related to public opinion, national, European and international management policies, the role of NGOs, and the communication of these flows by executives working in relevant public, private and public sectors. The second specialization will train executives who will work at press offices locally or abroad and/or public bodies dealing with the issue of communication management of refugees /immigrants. The third specialization concerns the training of Cultural Mediators.
