Distinction for the Bioflames in the GreenTech Challenge
Environmental catastrophe and climate change are two of the main threats that humanity encounters nowadays, and in the years to come. Their emergency cannot be ignored, and their effects or impacts may be physical, ecological, social and/or economic. Fortunately, technological innovation constitutes a promising path which can lead to ecological solutions, and environmental sustainable development. In an attempt to align itself with the international tendency which reconciles ecological consciousness with technological innovation, one of Greece’s most avant-garde institutions – the National Technical University of Athens organizes for the 4th time – the green innovation competition: “GreenTech Challenge”.
GreenTech Challenge by ESU NTUA is the largest National Green Innovation Program, addressed to startups, innovative Mass media, researchers and students who want to develop innovative solutions mainly related to the Environment, tackling Climate Change and Sustainable Development.
Characteristically, in this year’s competition, the BioFlames team won the second place in the field of Energy and Environment, presenting a business plan for the utilization of coffee residues and the production of biofuels from them. BioFlames managed to stand out from the 125 participating teams, in the category innovation idea.
George Karakatsanis (CO-founder & CEO of EVOTROPIA) was the team’s mentor. Ιn the team participated, as well, the university students Georgios Pismisis and Asterios Loukas from the Department of Environmental Engineering of the Democritus University of Thrace, and Athena Poupa from the Department of Economics of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
