Vassilis Marinos, Assistant Professor of the Department of Geotechnics of the School of Civil Engineering of NTUA, was elected the new President of the International Association of Engineering Geology and the Environment (IAEG: https://www.iaeg.info), for the period 2023-2026.
This is an important achievement for him and it promotes the international reputation of his School, NTUA and the Greek scientific community.
The candidacy of Prof. Marinos prevailed over two other strong candidacies from China and New Zealand.
IAEG has 69 National Groups and has around 4600 members. It is a member of FedIGS (https://geoengineeringfederation.org) (Federation of International Geo-Engineering Societies, together with the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering, the International Society of Rock Mechanics and the International Geosynthetics Society).
Action areas that have been identified by the IAEG are focused on promoting Education & Training, Professional Standards & Leadership in Engineering Geology and communicate Research, Innovation & Practice. A core subject in the IAEG is the role of Engineering Geology in Geotechnical Engineering, as well as the respective environmental implications. The design and construction of tunnels, dams, slopes and other infrastructure works is always showcased. It is an object of IAEG with a lasting character. The last decade, IAEG focuses in the fields of engineering geology and geohazards. Solutions are proposed on preventing and tackling challenges relating to landslides and geotechnical failures of all kinds, by using new technological techniques and innovations. The global development of land uses which have been inaccessible until recently, and the realization of demanding infrastructure projects, bring focus to the topics of geohazards, climate change and geo-engineering risks.
