History

Democritus University of Thrace (D.U.Th.) was foundedwith the legislative decree no. 37 in July 27th 1973 and started to run in the academic year 1974-1975 with the admission of its first students to the Department of Civil Engineering in Xanthi and the Department of Law in Komotini. It was named ‘Democritus’ in honor of the ancient Greek philosopher Democritus, whose origin was from the town of Abdera in the Prefecture of Xanthi. The administrative seat of the University resides in the city of Komotini, the capital city of the Administrative Region of East Macedonia & Thrace while administrative services are also provided in all four cities where the university expands.

Democritus University of Thrace has, since its foundation, been the first Greek regional multi-campus university that not only solely served purely educational objectives. Aapart from its primary educational and research activity, its running via its multiple campuses, at first in the cities of Xanthi and Komotini, and later on in Alexandroupolis and Orestiada, has essentially participated in the efforts for the economic growth of the Administrative Region of Thrace. At the same time, the university has also significantly contributed to the reinforcement of the national and cultural character of the wider area in Thrace as well as to the upgrade of its living and social status through direct and indirect initiatives.

The Universityis classified among the biggest Greek Universities in terms of the number of its active student population. Geographically dispersed throughout Thrace, with 8 Schools, 20 Departments and a wide variety of Postgraduate Programs, with a student population that reaches approximately 29,000 (undergraduate, graduate students and candidate PhD students) and with a research and teaching staff that exceeds 700 people, the university still is the only academic institution in the Administrative Region of East Macedonia & Thrace. The outline of the course curricula on offer covers themajority of modern scientific subjects starting from the School of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences in Orestiada, the Schools of Health Sciences and Education Studies in Alexandoupolis, the Schools of Law, Classical and Humanity Studies, Social, Political and Economic Studies and the School of Physical Education and Sports in Komotini to the Polytechnic School in Xanthi. Obviously, the education provided and the research undertaken at the university are both highly multi-faceted. Additionally, the international academic dimension of the institution in combination with the longitudinal commitment of its staff to the quality of the educational services it provides have as an immediate consequence the creation of a dominant footprint in the academic timeliness of our country and the wider geographic area.

Within a vividly changing environment, D.U.Th. continues to aim both at educational and research excellence while, it also builds upon the challenges and demands of the future. It re-orients its research strategy based upon innovation, entrepreneurship, technology, the new digital era, the growth of large-scale research and thepursuit of financial resources from various agencies both in Greece and abroad. Nowadays, the landmark of D.U.Th. is imparted via innovative graduate programs of international recognition as well as through initiatives that allows the university to overcome the barriers of modern bureaucracy and geographical seclusion.
D.U.Th. seeks to reinforce its research profile through collaborations and projects that render it one of the leading research organizations in Greece.

International Studies

Postgraduate programs in foreign languages!

Masters (MSc)

School of Engineering | Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering

The MSc will provide postgraduate students with cutting-edge knowledge in Quantum Mechanics, Quantum Computing and Quantum Technologies, as well as skills and abilities that will enable them to program quantum computers and to develop novel quantum algorithms. Graduates of this program will also be able to use and apply the acquired knowledge not only in science and research but also to tackle problems that companies face in their operation as well as to create new enterprises. Graduates of the program may also continue their studies towards a Ph.D. degree.

In the MSc program participate:

  1. The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Democritus University of Thrace (DECE), and
  2. The Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, National Center of Scientific Research “Demokritos” (INN-D)

The MSc program participates in both the “IBM Quantum Educators Program” and the “IBM Quantum Researchers Program”

Quantum computers are novel computers that use quantum mechanical properties, such as state superposition and entanglement to execute computations and solve complex problems, which are impossible to be solved using classical supercomputers, no matter how much computation power they provide. Quantum technologies use quantum mechanical principles and properties to design, implement and develop novel quantum systems, such as quantum bits, quantum computer circuits, quantum sensors, quantum communications and teleportation, quantum metrology, and quantum cryptography systems.

Quantum computers and quantum technologies are at the core of the second quantum revolution, which is expected to have a significant impact on all sciences, in the industry as well as in health and everyday life.

Students will acquire in-depth knowledge and skills in the following specific areas:

  • Quantum computing
  • Quantum and quantum bit devices
  • Quantum Solid-state devices
  • Quantum communications
  • Quantum algorithms
  • Quantum machine learning

No previous knowledge of Quantum Mechanics is required. Courses in Quantum Mechanics and Linear Algebra for Quantum Mechanics are part of the MSc curriculum.

Courses in areas in which quantum computing and quantum technologies have already made an impact on, are also included in the MSc curriculum:

  • Natural and Unconventional Computing
  • Computational Biology
  • Artificial Intelligence
  • Big Data Handling

The postgraduate students will use IBM’s quantum computers for coursework via the cloud available through the “IBM Quantum Educators Program”. Students may access IBM Quantum systems for their dissertation research via the “IBM Quantum Researchers Program”.

Faculty of Health Sciences | Department of Medicine

The postgraduate studies for this MSc programme lead to the acquisition of a Master’s Degree. The programme curriculum requires the attendance of taught courses for three full-time academic semesters and the completion of a master’s dissertation.

Students should be trained in the subjects of food microbiome, intestinal microbiome, nutritional and foodborne diseases and their interrelations with Public Health. Τhorough knowledge should be given to graduate students of the impact of food and eating habits on health .The aim of the program is to train and specialize young scientists, who will be able to implement and shape Health and Nutrition policies, to develop programs at all levels, to work in Food , Nutrition and Health international organisms, to assess risk stratification to implement preventive measures and means and to deal with potential pathogens.

The program should offer specific knowledge and training of those who undertake duties in the field of Health Sciences, as well as to contribute to the further training of specialized and specialized Physicians of multiple specialties and in particular gastroenterologists and endocrinologists, as well as other scientists such as Pharmacists, Molecular Biology, Biology, Chemistry, Food Science, Food Technology, Nutrition, Dietetics or other similar subject.
