The Department of Mathematics of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens recorded another important distinction in the most important international mathematics competition held in Bulgaria about a month ago. 19-year-old George Georgeles and 20-year-old Dimitris Emmanuel won gold medals against 393 students, and 72 teams from 43 countries in the 30th edition of the competition. Specifically, Dimitris, now a third-year student, took 26th place and George, now a second-year student, took 50-53 place (a four-person tie), recording one of the best performances by the Mathematics Department team.
The International Mathematics Competition for Students has been organized since 1994 by University College London and involves leading universities in the United States, Europe, and Asia. The students of the Department of Mathematics of the University of Athens have been participating consistently since the academic year 2007-08 until today, achieving significant success each year and creating a cradle of science as a benchmark.
