The University of Athens becomes the first Greek university to join the 200 best universities in the world, in an international general ranking of universities, with more than one criterion. This was announced  by the foundation, based on the results of the world ranking of Universities “Webometrics Ranking Web of Universities“.

More specifically, the University of Athens is ranked 180th worldwide among 12,000 universities. It should be noted that the EKPA, in relation to the corresponding ranking last year, rose 53 positions (from 233 to 180). In addition, it is ranked 49th among the 3262 universities in the European Union included in this ranking. “The success of the National and Kapodistrian University is a consequence of the internationalization and extroversion strategy that has been implemented in recent years and is bearing fruit, making the institution an internationally recognized” research oriented “university, which develops important research collaborations of high performance”  said the dean of the university Mr. Thanos Dimopoulos. The University of Athens is followed by the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 205th place, the National Technical University of Athens in 329th place, while the top five is completed by the University of Patras in 533rd place and the University of Ioannina in 581. The published ranking includes about 12,000 of the 30,000 for which data were collected. Among them are Greek universities and private institutions.

This ranking is compiled by Cybermetrics (CCHS), a unit of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), which is also the main research institute in Spain. It provides information on more than 28,000 universities based on their online presence and the impact of their research work. Universities are ranked according to criteria that mainly concern their presence and popularity on the World Wide Web, the impact of their research work as reflected in the total number of citations to the articles and publications of their professors and researchers and the percentage of their publications  which is in the top 10% of the most “read” and important publications in the world.
