According to a survey conducted by Open Doors, American students who chose Greece for their studies increased by almost 12% during the academic year 2018-2019. More specifically, the number of U.S. students studying in Greece rose from 5,223 to 5,843 compared to the previous academic year. Greece gained 2 places and reached the 12th one in the world, in the list with the most popular international educational destinations for American students (it was ranked 14th in 2019, and 17th in 2018). “I’m thrilled that Greece is becoming a study destination of choice for more and more American students. I expect this increase to accelerate as we get through the COVID-19 pandemic together, and the Greek Ministry of Education builds on its excellent initiatives to attract more international students, deepening the bonds between our peoples and strengthening our shared values. The U.S. Embassy will continue to support these efforts,” said U.S. Ambassador in Greece Geoffrey Pyatt, highlighting the Greek state’s efforts in the field of education. It is worth mentioning that the survey is conducted by the Institute of International Education (IIE), an organization responsible for publishing annual statistical analyses of international students in the U.S. since its inception in 1919.
