The Department of Mathematics of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens participated with three students in the International Mathematics Competition SEEMOUS 2021 that took place in Agros, Cyprus from 19 to 24 July 2021. UoA’s students won a gold and two bronze medals. More specifically, Margaritis Minas won a gold medal, Theodoropoulos Panagiotis won a bronze medal and Tsirkas Konstantinos won a bronze medal as well.
The team was accompanied by the former gold medalist of the Mathematics Department, George Gavrilopoulos.
Launched in 2006, SEEMOUS competition (South-Eastern European Mathematics Olympiad for University Students) constitutes a mathematics competition for both first and second year students who compete for five hours in four problems which are translated into the language of each contestant and relate to courses such as: Infinite Calculus, Linear Algebra, Basic Algebra, Real Analysis, Combinatorics, Number Theory.
Every year, preparatory courses are delivered to the interested students by professors of the Department of Mathematics as well as by older students who have gained important distinctions in the past.
