Description
From Ancient Athens to the Digital Age, democracy is a fluid concept made up of various applications, methods and institutions, and its transformation is ongoing. The main objective of this course is to familiarize students with the basic aspects of democracy, combining its historical development with modern challenges. How and why early democracy emerged, how modern democracy evolved, and what this history teaches us about the future? The course explores democracy from a philosophical perspective, and places special emphasis on the intercultural character of modern discussions on democracy. A range of contemporary issues will also be examined, such as whether the world is currently in the midst of a democratic recession and whether democracy can survive and evolve in a sociopolitical landscape ruled by algorithms. Upon completing this course, participants will be able to critically reflect on the naissance and historical development of democracy, and how it bears upon contemporary challenges.
Program Structure: The program includes daily course class sessions, smaller discussion sections, as well as field trips, excursions and activities that will allow participants to delve into Greece’s cultural heritage and contemporary society.
Venue: School of Philosophy, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece.
Date: July 14, 2024 – July 28, 2024.
Course Format and Length: In-Person, 2 weeks, 3 hours per day.
