City Circus Athens Hostel

The Hostel

city circus hostel
City Circus Hostel is an alternative travelers space for the restless voyager, the escape artist, the acrobat. “Acrobat” literally means “a person that lives on the edge,” and that is the idea of this circus: to dwell in the surreal, to embrace the weird, to explore with freedom. Whether you’re running away from something (we hope it’s not the law) or running towards something on your adventure, City Circus is the ideal spot to rest your wandering feet and dreamy head.

The Location

City Circus is in the heart of Athens, in the edgy and hip Psirri neighborhood, fast becoming the center of Athens’ Ghetto Tourism district. We’re beside numerous eateries and watering holes and a short walk or bike ride from any sites in Athens we believe are worth visiting. If you’re not the self-motored type, the Metro and Train are only 300 meters away. Our neighborhood is laid-back but just down the street it’s bustling with theatergoers and nightly revelers. Join the Psirri street party or lounge on our rooftop to sip a beer and gaze at the timeless Acropolis and then settle into our super-comfy mattresses to rest your vagabond bones because the next day, we’ve got a selection of wild activities for you to choose from. City Circus is housed in a cozy 4-storey, freshly restored, early 20th century mansion, complete with frescoed ceilings, wrought-iron balconies and baroque tiles. We’ve dressed it up with vintage furniture, reclaimed materials, modern design elements and street art by a selection of fresh local talent.

Design Concept

We finalized our concept when we found the location; it was this property and the neighborhood surrounding it that designated the character of the hostel. Psirri was always bustling with artisans making everything from shoes to wooden sieves and there has recently been a new wave of incoming artists and designers. And what is even more exceptional in this district is the unique street art. You can imagine that this juxtaposition of nostalgia and cutting edge design sparks intense creative energy and an atmosphere that is uniquely vibrant and occasionally surreal. We have a penchant for the surreal and this is where our Circus theme comes in. The early 20th century backdrop and our neoclassical building are ideal for a vaudeville revival. Add a few characters from Fellini’s dream sequences and then stir in some acrobats. Circus performers have often been associated with wayfarers and vagabonds and maybe we’re being overly romantic but we couldn’t help being seduced by this idea of “running away to join the circus.” Aren’t circus performers as well as travelers always running away from a restricting reality? Staying in line with our nostalgia but also following our belief in sustainability, we chose to use, or rather, reuse old materials in the design. We love the idea that each article in the hostel comes with a story, a memory from a previous life. And we’re proud that we’re minimizing waste by up cycling old floors, used furniture, picture frames, etc. We travelled across Europe to add objects to our collection of vintage furniture and whenever necessary, we hired locals to hand make customized furniture and artwork. We preserved the 100-year ceiling art and added school chairs and desks from the 1950’s, chandeliers from the 30’s, Danish couches from the 60’s and funky lighting from the 70’s. we weren’t deliberately trying to “mix-and-match.” We were just choosing pieces that we loved and looked great together. And sometimes, guests even leave behind their own art! The design was all done by ourselves and that’s what gives it such a personal touch and homey appeal.
