Launched by the Government of Greece and the Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs, “Pharos: New Horizons in Education” aims to enhance extroversion of Greek Higher Education Institutions. “Pharos” in Greek means “lighthouse” (Φάρος, in Greek). This word symbolizes the source of knowledge. Using it, the Greek Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs wants to present to the world that Greek Universities and their staff are projecting their knowledge and expertise outward, through their increased extroversion initiatives and booming international partnerships.
The “Pharos Summit 2022: Greek – U.S. Collaboration in Higher Education”, announced on November 8th by the U.S. Department of State, the Greek Government, and the Institute of International Education (IIE), is part of the International Academic Partnership Program (IAPP) Greece – initiated in 2019. During the 7 day summit – 6-12/11/2022, 54 U.S. and Greek higher education institutions came together, accompanied by high-level representatives and leadership from the U.S. Department of State, the Greek Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs, IIE and Fulbright Foundation – Greece to explore new partnerships and strengthen already existing ties. The American delegation’s robust itinerary included visits at all Greek public universities as well as guided tours of key cultural landmarks and historical sites around Greece. It’s worth noting that the history making delegation from the U.S., consisting of representatives from 30 prestigious American institutions, is the largest delegation of U.S. universities that IIE has ever organized in its 100+ years of operation, something that reflects both sides’ intentions to expand and deepen collaboration in the critical field of higher education.
