The International Museum Day is organized worldwide, every year since 1977, around the 18th of May. It is coordinated by the International Council of Museums (ICOM). On this day, the ICOM choose a specific theme which is the heart of all the events and activities that the museums around the world are planning for these days. The theme for 2017 is “Museums and contested histories: Saying the unspeakable in museums“. This year, ICOM wants to point out that museums are not only very important means of culture but also means of awareness about the need for a society to adopt new ways of living which they take care of the environment and the nature! Let’s highlight that in 2016, more than 35,000 museums participated in the event in some 145 countries! Every year, Greece participates in this international event and celebrates this day with free admission to museums and archaeological sites!
