International distinction for the Law school of the University of Athens

Return |

A team of undergraduate students of the Law school of the University of Athens achieved a significant distinction in European Law Moot Court Competition 2019-2020 taking the 2cd place in the  regional final of Bucharest.

The European Law Moot Court Competition has been held since 1989 under the auspices of the Court of Justice of the European Union with the participation of over 80 European and American universities. It is based on a simulation of a trial before the Court of Justice of the European Union, and involves a written and oral procedure. The peculiarity of the competition that distinguishes him from others is bilingualism, as the teams are invited to develop their claims in English and French.

Every team which takes the 1st place in every regional final qualifies for the grand final which takes place at the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg. The theme of this year's competition raised three topical issues: (a) the conflict of the right to religious freedom with animal welfare in the context of the use of particular methods of slaughter by religious minority groups during the performance of their worship duties; the abolition of seasonal changes in time (summer and winter time respectively); and (c) the possibility of an EU Member State. equating a Member State for taxation purposes with a state that has just left the EU, with clear references to the UK's extremely recent and timely exit from the EU.

The Athens Law School team consisted of undergraduates Maria Vastardis, Efstathios Capravello, Eirini-Pelagia Konstantinopoulou and Vassiliki Lamprinoudi, while students Anavalisou Vassilisou and Vassilissiou wrote the memorandum.

Our team took the 2cd place in Bucharest among 12 universities. Thus, it is included in the best 8 teams among 80 European and American universities.
