Summer School in Mytilene - Covering the Refugee / Migration flows

Return |

The Department of Communication and Media Studies at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, in collaboration with the Department of Sociology of the University of the Aegean, organises and from July 5th to 19th a Summer School in Mytilene, Lesvos.

Mytilene, the capital of the Greek island Lesvos, is infamously known throughout international media for its role in the so-called 'European Refugee Crisis'. According to UNHCR, 57% of arrivals by sea transited via Lesvos and the port of Mytilene became a primary entryway into the EU. The island, one of the five Hotspot islands, is known for its notoriously overcrowded camp Moria, which is the biggest camp in Europe. Lesvos. Issues and implications of the recent migration wave not only concern matters of reception and accommodation but are in the centre of political discussions and public debate for numerous other reasons and policy concerns: asylum and other mechanisms for international protection, education, employment, and labour market,  questions of social and cultural cohesion. Simultaneously, hate speech, fake news, and growing anti-migrant and xenophobic sentiment require informed and critical responses.

Deadline for Applications

  • May 22nd

Participation Fee

  • EU/EEA countries incl. accommodation: 800 €  (500 € without accom.)
  • non-EU/EEA incl. accommodation*: 1600 € (1000 € without accom.)

The purpose and objectives of the intensive Summer School is the training of graduates in communication, media and journalism, as well as executives from the private and public sector in this field, regarding valid and objective information of citizens. Additionally, the Summer School will provide opportunities to students to investigate the communication management of refugee/migration flows in order to promote a positive response to the ongoing tensions and crises created at national and cross-national level.

Besides visits to Moria, Kara Tepe and PIKPA, collaborations with locally active NGOs will facilitate an in-depth understanding of the challenges on the island and allow for an insight into the situation in Greece. The seminars and workshops on the campus of the University of the Aegean in Mytilene, Lesvos, will bring together renowned academia and experts to shed light on the phenomenon of migration and to discuss proposals and recommendations.
