25th March National Holiday in Greece

Return |

What is the 25th March National Holiday in Greece about?

What do you KNOW about Greek Independence Day (25th March)?

Is a national holiday that is celebrated annually in Greece on March 25 and it is a double holiday! A historical and a religious one! The Greek War of Independence, also known as the Greek Revolution was a successful war of independence waged by the Greek revolutionaries between 1821 and 1832 against the Ottoman Empire. This Revolution is celebrated by the modern Greek state as a national day on 25 March. On the other hand, it coincides with the Greek Orthodox Church’s celebration of the Annunciation to the Theotokos, when the Archangel Gabriel appeared to Mary and told her that she would bear the son of God.

What you will SEE?

In every town and village throughout Greece you have the ability to see a school flag parade. In Athens you can see an armed forces parade too. Moreover, you may observe Greek flags flying at balconies.

What you will EAT?

“Bacaliaros Skordalia”! It is a custom of the day and a “must-eat”. We talk about fried cod fish with a very tasty garlic sauce! You can enjoy it almost everywhere (tavern or restaurant)!
