Why do all fraternities and sororities have Greek names?
First of all, what fraternities and sororities are? They have a long history in the American Universities and Colleges. Actually, they are social organizations that mainly address undergraduate students. There are a lot of similar organizations around the world but with different infrastructure. Fraternities include only male members and sororities only female respectively. The most known fraternities and sororities are the academics, social, religious, political and artistic.
In USA first fraternities appeared in 1770 without having the same form like today’s. ΧΦ was the oldest fraternity which established in 1824 at Princeton College.
The main difference between American and European fraternities is that in America the communities include initiation, symbol using, facilities for the alimentation and housing for the members.
But how the Greek name arose? The majority of the names of fraternities consists of 2 or 3 Greek letters that’s why they are called "Greek letter organizations". Actually the Greek letters are being used for something like secret code. To be precise, it’s about a phrase that is only known by the members( for example the name ΦΒΚ comes out from “Φιλοσοφία Βίου Κυβέρνησης” that means philosophy is the navigator of our life. ) Sometimes the 3 letters were not equivalent to some phrase.
In conclusion, we would say that the fraternities are affected by the Ancient Greek culture and education. Another proof for that is that the members are often called Greeks.
