Twelve Greek academics and researchers working in Greek Universities and research institutes are included in the list of 6,602 most influential scientists in the world, as evidenced by the impact of their work for the last 11 years. The list, entitled “The Highly Cited Researchers”, is compiled by the internationally recognized Thomson Reuters organization as part of the Clarivate Analytics project and is based on data from the Web of Science research database. Of these, 3,774 are in 21 specific scientific fields and fields and 2,828 in the category of interdisciplinary fields.
The data used for the analysis and selection of highly distinguished researchers come from the Basic Science Indices (ESI), 2010-2020, which result from approximately 169,000 articles and high-impact and influential research papers. Each of these research papers ranks in the top 1% of articles with the highest number of heterogeneous citations for each specific year. A second criterion for selecting a researcher in this table is whether all of his / her reports in a specific scientific field rank him / her in the 1% of researchers with the highest number of reports in that field. This way, the work of younger researchers is highlighted and does not overlap with the work of older researchers who, due to many years of activity, have a larger volume of research work.
According to the Agency, the list of the best 6,602 international researchers whose work is important according to specific indicators, and at the same time provides a source for the work of other researchers, is compiled out of the approximately 9,000,000 active researchers worldwide.
Table 1 presents the twelve Greek University students and researchers who work in Greek institutions and according to the ranking have a very significant research impact worldwide. This table presents their overall research work in terms of publications, set of heterogeneous reports and H-index, as reflected in the available data of the Publons database of the Web of Science. In cases where data does not appear in the Publons database because the researchers did not create or enrich their profile in the database, the WoS Author Search tool (with an asterisk in the table) was used.
Among the Greek academics and researchers, the Professor of Medicine and Rector of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens Meletios – Athanasios Dimopoulos leads with 2358 publications and 81,202 hetero reports, followed by the Professor of Medicine of the University Professor of Medicine of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens Gerasimos Filippatos with 773 publications and 74,767 citations. Ιn 4th place the Professor of Informatics of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki George Karagiannidis with 596 publications and 15,108 first citations Athens Antonia Trichopoulou with 511 publications and 26,075 reports,
As can be seen from the above data, five of them come from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, two from the University of Crete, and one participation comes from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, the University of Thessaly, the Agricultural University of Athens, the University of Piraeus and the Institute Information Systems ATHENS.
This distinction is also reflected in the Institutions of the distinguished university students. At the same time, the high level of human resources of our Universities and our research centers is highlighted once again.
